Explore Natural Dye Baths & Using Resists

Create simple dye baths with dried dye flowers

Join Beth Mort of Snapdragon Flower Farm and learn how to create simple dye baths with dried dye flowers on pre-mordanted (this is an important process you’ll learn about in class)  silk and repurposed cotton. We will discuss how to prepare for the purest hues and learn different ways of resist binding to create beautiful patterns in your dye projects.

In addition to working with a variety of dye flowers grown on Beth’s farm you’ll learn about the easiest to grow and best pigment plants for your garden, not just growing tips but also harvest and processing for dye projects all year long. You will learn the basics of preparing fabrics for natural dyes and also create a small bundle of pressed flowers to keep for your future dye work.

You’ll leave with your hand-dyed silk scarf and cotton bandana as well as seed of some of Beth’s favorite dye plants for the 2026 season.

All tools and materials provided.

Cost: 115.00 plus sales tax

It’s simple, bring clothing and/or household textiles in need of repair (limit 2 items per person), you’ll be paired up with a mender who will fix your items.

Do you miss wearing your favorite t-shirt, hoodie or dress? Do you have a favorite pair of jeans you just can't wear because they're a little too revealing? Maybe you have a tablecloth or pillow cover that needs a little love? We've got you covered. PLUS bring your family and their clothes to be mended and your pet’s clothes too!

Sustainable Sewing: Introduction to Japanese Sashiko Embroidery

 In this class, you’ll learn the art of visible mending through the Japanese technique of Sashiko, taught by sewist Chelsey Byrd Lewallen. Translated as “little stabs”, students will learn how Sashiko morphed from a mending technique into a textile surface design method. Participants will receive a pre-marked piece of indigo dyed fabric, Sashiko needle and thread to practice different stitch designs.

Sustainable Sewing: Intro to Quilting

Learn a new skill in this fun class!

In this hands-on class, longtime teacher and quilter Tressa Emch will teach you how to quilt using techniques to create two styles of quilt blocks, which you will sew together to make a finished reusable tote bag. Confident machine sewing skills are required. Use of machines and all supplies are included.

Classes are designed for students 16 and older. Please only register if you meet this age requirement.

Join Us for this Important Event

SZW is hosting a knit/stitch along and donation drive of the Red Resistance Hat

We are working with Art Salvage to collect donations of yarn and fabric to use, but recommend you bring your own to work with.

We will have sewing machines available for your use, please bring thread.

We’ll be donating hats and balaclavas to those on the ground in Minneapolis.

Spokane has its very own Fleece and Fiber Festival, now in its second year with over 80 vendors and classes covering topics from making salve to, needle felting,yarn making, fleece processing, and more!  Spokane Zero Waste will be there presenting our work on building a regional Fibershed to support the development of a natural fiber system. Come and learn, find amazing fiber art and pet some sheep!

You'll find colorful totes, stylish bags, dopp kits and more made from promotional banners that would otherwise end up in the waste stream as well as reusable bowl covers, insulated lunch totes, utensil rolls and reusable produce bags to support your sustainable ways. 

ReCraft Lab transforms lives and materials into durable goods for community and personal sustainability.   

We train immigrant and refugee women in the sewing trades with a focus on reuse and upcycling.
